SPELMAN COLLEGE

Spelman College is America's oldest historically black college for women. A private institution of higher learning, Spelman is located in Atlanta, Georgia.

LEAD Global partnered with Spelman College to host orientation for students bound for Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa in preparation for the trip abroad.

The aim of the Spelman experience was to provide on-campus orientation programming, enabling student participants to form connections with each other as well as with the executives serving as their volunteer chaperones. The program also sought to mitigate anxieties that may have developed prior to the students’ international travel.

Orientation was conducted within Spelman’s Center for Leadership/Ethics, and program content focused heavily on developing oneself through team based project work.

The meaningful interaction between participating students and chaperones was proof that a supportive collegiate atmosphere was key in preparing the young learners for South Africa.
